Aistė Jakonytė

PAINTINGS

ABOUT

Home, personal environments and domestic interiors are recurring themes in Aistė’s paintings. Often drawing on her two cultural backgrounds, the artist parallels and critiques the perceived differences and stereotypes between the two.

Literature and cinematography are also big sources of inspiration, of which motifs and references become combined with more personal and biographical elements. This is used as means to reinterpret different subject matter and the artist’s and the audience’s relationships and associations with it.

Aistė paints either directly from the subject or from observational drawings, which allows her to capture the immediacy and fleeting nature of some of the subjects in her work (be it still life or a memory). She uses a combination of oil and different types of acrylics to help preserve this immediacy, which the paint helps to showcase by preserving painterly marks. Colour also plays an important part in Aistė’s work, which she uses to draw attention to the subject matter.
